Make Crock Pot Split Pea Soup with the leftover Ham Bone

If you have leftover ham or just the ham bone you can make a big pot of split pea soup for almost nothing, this definitely fits into my Meals for only $5 category.

Here's how I make mine in the crockpot: Put the ham bone in the crock pot, add one diced onion, add about 4 stalks of diced celery, 4-5 medium diced carrots, 1 lb split peas or lentils.

 
Fill the pot with water leaving an inch or so at the top, set on low and cook for about 8 hours and voila' you've got a pot of yummy, warm, fill your tummy goodness. I don't add any additional seasonings because the ham bone usually provides enough flavor, heat up a loaf of french bread or sourdough to go with it.
