Free Kids Workshop at Home Depot, Saturday Feb 2!

Saturday February 2nd is the first Saturday of the month so that means it's time for the FREE Kids Workshop at Home Depot again. Every month you can take your kids into Home Depot to build a craft, this month is a Valentine Card Holder. If you haven't tried it before you have to go, they get a little Home Depot apron to keep and every time they come back and complete a craft they get a pin to put on their apron with the picture of the craft on it. Super fun for them and it's FREE, hours 9-12, ages 5-12, it tends to be really busy right at 9 so we wait to go around 11ish. Here's a link for more details Home Depot Kids Workshop.

2 Ingredient Chili, Cream Cheese Dip....Chili and you guessed it, Cream Cheese!

This is one of my easiest go to recipes to whip up for any kind of get together, I'm sure a lot of people are either having a Super Bowl Party or going to a Super Bowl Party so you are looking for easy snack recipes. This one is great because you can put it in a crockpot, just let it warm up and then stir, you don't have to be tied to the kitchen stove.
Here's what you need:

2 Cans of Chili, I only had one for the picture but you will want to use 2. Does not have to be this brand or kind, just 2 cans of whatever chili you like. 1, 8oz pkg Cream Cheese. If you are using the stove, just put in a small saucepan, stir while it heats up, cream cheese will be completely melted. Tortilla chips are best with it but use whatever sounds good to you, I promise it will go fast, you will be thinking you should have made a double batch.
The best  way to do this if you are having a party and don't want to stay in the kitchen stirring is to put the ingredients in a crock pot on low about an hour before you need it to be ready. It should be warm and bubbly and you can just give it a good stir and leave it plugged in, it's better when it's warm and guests can just scoop out what they want and then put the lid back on.

Make Baking Soda Sachets to put in stinky shoes or closets!

Make your own little deodorizing, freshening sachets out of baking soda and coffee filters. I have the cone style but I think the basket style works best, fill it with baking soda and tie something around the top. You could put them anywhere, shoes, pockets of coats, hang a couple in your closet from a string, put them in your car, put a couple in the fridge and freezer, drawers...........the list goes on. It's totally safe and natural and very inexpensive especially if you buy the large bags!

What this is and why you NEED one!

Kind of a gross subject, but you know when the drain in your sinks or bathtub starts slowing down and the water sits for a long time, it's usually because of hair building up, and if you don't get it out it eventually stops draining altogether. You can buy products that you pour down the drain and it unclogs it but have you read the label on that stuff, it is so nasty and poisonous, you aren't suppose to let it touch your skin or breathe it in, some of it causes a chemical reaction that makes the pipe heat up when you pour it in, and it's super expensive! I realize that it's necessary sometimes, the clog may be way down in the pipe or you don't want to spend a fortune having a plumber come to your house, so I'm not saying don't use it, I'm just saying I try to use it as little as possible to keep the chemicals out of my house and out of the environment and water. I have seen homemade remedies using baking soda and vinegar but I have not tried it, anybody know if it works?

I've been using this tool, it's called a Zip It, I found this particular one at Home Depot for about $2.50 but I'm sure you can find something similar anywhere. You just take out the plug for the drain and stick the Zip It down in the drain and fish around for whatever is clogging it or slowing it down. It is really disgusting but it works, I'm actually kind of obsessive about it so I go around the house and clean all the drains quite often (I know weird right?), I figure doing preventative maintenance will reduce the chance of a big clog way down in the pipes where I can't reach. The package says for "one time use" bahhhh....I'll use mine until it stops working, I just clean it after I get done using it.

Here's a couple different kinds I found on Amazon, they are all basically the same thing ranging in prices, it's a long plastic stick with a handle and little barbs to hook whatever is clogging the drain, you don't need the most expensive one, mine was super cheap and it still works.

Valentines Day is coming up in a few weeks...Here's a recipe for Homemade Bath Salts!

Keep it simple this year for Valentine's Day, make a homemade gift for your Sweetie or your Bestie! Super easy and not super expensive!

Homemade Bath Salts
2 Cups Epsom Salts in a clean bowl
Add 4 Tablespoons Baking Soda
Mix well
Add 6-8 drops of Essential Oil you could use lavender, rose, freesia, pick something that you really like because it will be strong, and if you add too much just add a little more salt.
Mix well, put in a pretty jar with rose petals. You would need to add a little food coloring if you wanted to make them pink.

Make your own garment bags for storage!

I know this looks a little ghetto but if you need garment bags for nice clothes in your closet, just use large shopping bags and your own hangers. It doesn't look great but if it keeps the dust off and protects your clothing then why not, nobody else has to see it and it's a way to recycle those enormous shopping bags you get sometimes.

Did you know?......A little Coupons 101

So have you been looking through coupons and noticed some of them have store logos on them and wondered if you have to use them at that store? I put some examples below of coupons that have the Walmart logo that you may have seen and wondered about. If it is a regular manufacturer coupon and it says "Redeemable at Walmart" or "Available at Walmart" it does not mean that you have to use it at Walmart, it can be used anywhere that accepts manufacturer coupons. Of course Walmart wants you to buy the product at their store and use the coupon but you don't have to. If it says Redeemable "only" at Walmart or can be redeemed "only" at Walmart then it has to be used at Walmart and cannot be used at any other retailers. Big companies like Walmart and others pay to have their logo on the coupon hoping it will entice you to buy that product at their store, but you should be able to tell whether or not it has to be redeemed there just by paying attention to the wording.

Have you seen the Penny Floor?

I saw this while surfing, a young couple covers their bedroom floor with approximately 60,000 pennies. It took about 4 months to complete the project and they documented it on their blog ThePennyFloor.com. It's really interesting to read about and lots more cool pictures. Go see it at ThePennyFloor.com.

Here's some stats from their blog ThePennyFloor.com

1873: the oldest penny used; coin features an indian head instead of Abraham Lincoln

1944: year of the WWII 440 steel penny used because of a copper shortage

59,670: total amount of pennies used

128: total number of man-hours it took to lay pennies

2: total number of people who made the penny floor possible

184: number of reruns (see glossary) placed before grouting

$596.70: total cost of pennies.

$2.55: total cost per square foot x 234sq = 59,670 pennies.

Thanks The Penny Floor for the photos and stats, love it!!

FREE Speed Stick Antiperspirant/Deodorant at Safeway!

Update: I wrote this post earlier this morning before I went to Safeway, I just got back from shopping and it works like a charm, coupon scanned and I uploaded my receipt to ibotta to get my $ .50!

When I tell people you can get FREE stuff sometimes if you coupon, they always ask me how. Well here is an example of a FREE item that you can get right now if you live near a Safeway.

Right now in the Safeway ad they have a store coupon or a Just4U coupon that you can add to your phone that makes most Speed Stick products $1.49!

Then in this Sundays paper there is a $1.00 off coupon for Speed Stick, I didn't see it in the printable database from SmartSource but you can click on the below to search for it or print other coupons from SmartSource.

Then if you have the ibotta app that I have been tell you about, there is another digital coupon for 50 cents on any Speed Stick, just buy the product, scan the barcode and click a picture of the receipt and they will put 50 cents in your ibotta account which you can have transfered to Paypal once you reach $5. Super easy...sign up her for a FREE ibotta account!

So here's the break down:
$1.49 on store coupon
$1.00 minus $1 manufacturer coupon
$ .50 minus $ .50 ibotta

= $ .01 Moneymaker, you actually make a penny on the transaction!!!

Free Coupon printing paper in the mail today!

Look what I got in the mail! You know what that means.........coupons..... and free paper to print coupons!

Whatever coupons I don't use, I save and print coupons on the back, each sheet is just right for one coupon and the stores don't care what it's printed on as long as it scans. I save money on paper and recycle all in one!

Check your email for a BOGO coupon for Simple Truth Products!

If you have a Fred Meyer and you are subscribed to their email list check your email for a Buy One Get One Printable Coupon for any Simple Truth Products. Here in the NW we have Fred Meyer and QFC which are part of Kroger so if you shop at a Kroger or a store that belongs to Kroger you may get the same coupon.

I don't know all the details but I have seen displays at the store with a huge selection of Simple Truth organic products, I would be willing to buy one and get one for free. I didn't include a link to the coupon because it is tied to my specific card so it wouldn't work for you. When you are signed up for all these newsletters and clubs you get so much junk mail, it is kind of pain but it does pay off sometimes, I use a completely separate email address for junk mail like that so it doesn't clog up my personal email address.

I hit the Jackpot at the Thriftstore!

As I was scanning the shelves for treasures at the Thriftstore I looked down and to my utter surprise I saw my set that we use everyday, it's called Sango Blue, I still love it but we have a few chipped plates and bowls. I have thought of buying a new set but I didn't want to spend the money plus it's still good just missing a few pieces.
So excited and only 99cents each, I'm stocking up!

Anyone else love finding treasures at the thriftstore? Here's a couple more of my thriftstore finds from the past Thriftstore Mirror Redo, Before & After and Little Girls Dress Up Station Redo.

I Earned $1.75 on ibotta today at Safeway!

Have you heard of ibotta? It is a free mobile app that let's you earn money when you shop, it pays cash rewards for learning about and purchasing your favorite products. Today I shopped at Safeway, I bought Simply Orange Juice and some Glad Containers, they were both on sale and they were both on my ibotta app so when I bought them I scanned the barcodes, took a picture of my receipt and submitted it and I got $1.75. All it takes is a minimum of $5 in your account and you can ask to have it deposited into your paypal, I'm up to $6 but I'll build up some more before I transfer it. Here's the link to get the details and try it out ibotta app. The cool thing is you can buy the item on sale and use coupons and still get the money from ibotta so sometimes it ends up being free or even a moneymaker!

Here's a couple pictures so you get kind of an idea of what it's like. Sign up here: ibotta app

Love Curry but hate how the smell lingers in your house!

We love curry and make it quite often but I can't stand how the house smells after making it. This is what I cooked last night, it's not completely homemade, the curry spices are already mixed I just add all the ingredients. You can read how I make this Curry with Chicken Vegetables & Rice for around $ 5, and see more $5 Meal Ideas.

Chicken Curry w/ Vegetables & Rice
So why does the smell linger in your house? According to ehow.com the spices used in the curry ingredients release fat-soluble oil which causes the pungent aroma, the oil vapor is absorbed by fabrics and other porous surfaces, so it pretty much gets in everything, your clothes, furniture, window treatments.

Here's some things I do to lessen the smell, if it's summer I open all the windows and turn on fans, in the winter I turn on the fan over the stove and turn on a fan that is in my laundry room next to the kitchen, I keep them going throughout the whole cooking process and even after it's done. I always make sure there are no coats or jackets or clothes sitting around, I make sure they are put away and the door is closed, I also close the doors to my closet upstairs so the smell doesn't find it's way up to my clothes.  I add a cinnamon stick to the pot of curry when I'm cooking, it doesn't change the taste it just helps make the smell a little more pleasant, you can throw in a cinnamon stick whenever you are cooking anything that kind of stinks up the kitchen, it really does help. I set a bowl of plain white vinegar next to the stove, it helps absorb some of the odor and I make sure that I clean up the dishes right away, I'm famous for leaving pans "to soak" in the sink but I can't do that with the curry.

You can find more ideas on ehow.com, they suggest things like boiling vinegar and cinnamon sticks on the stove and sprinkling baking powder on your furniture and then vacuuming. I also have a bunch of household tips using vinegar and baking soda that you can read...Household Tips.
