Do you want to get your name off telemarketing lists or stop getting all those credit card offers?

Do you get completely annoyed when telemarkerters call and try to put the pressure on you or use guilt as a tactic to get you to buy or donate something, or what about all those credit card offers that come in the mail offering a really cheap rate on balance transfers but if you purchase anything new on the card they charge you an outrageously high interest rate.

There are some people that are "too nice" to say no or maybe don't understand completely that they have the right to say no or hang up, some of the slick telemarketers use guilt as a tactic and prey on those people, so a lot of times this poor person on the phone gets suckered into buying something when they can't afford it. People also get suckered into those credit card offers that are offering a really cheap rate on balance transfers but in small print the interest for new charges is outrageous or the cheap rate on the balance transfer is only for a temporary amount of time and then it goes way up, or maybe you are just trying to get your finances under control and stop charging so you have cut up your credit cards but then an offer shows up in the mail and tempts you to open a new account.
Here's how you can avoid some of these financial pitfalls:

  • Opt out of unsolicited credit card offers, 1-888-5 OPT OUT or 1-888-567-8688
  • Sign up for the Do Not Call Registry 1-888-382-1222 or www.donotcall.gov (keep in mind you will need to do this yearly to stay on the list.)
  • Remove your name from mailing, telemarketing and email lists, contact the Direct Marketing Association www.dmaconsumers.org or 212-768-7277

Have you discovered Quinoa (pronounced keen wa)?

If you haven't discovered Quinoa yet you have to try it! I'm using it as a side dish instead of rice, we love rice but Quinoa is so much better for you. I make it with chicken broth instead of just water, some people think it has a little bit of a bitter taste but the chicken broth or vegetable broth takes that away. My other favorite way to prepare it is with some lime juice and fresh cilantro.

Found a site that has online User Manuals for everything you can imagine!

I don't know if you're like us but this is just a fraction of the user manuals we have for all of our appliances and household gadgets but somehow when I'm looking for a specific manual I can't find it so I go to the Internet and search all over. I found this one SafeManuals.com and had to share because it's just one website that has tons of manuals, I thought this was genius because instead of searching the website of each manufacturer you just go to one site and chances are they have the manual you are looking for. Check it out: SafeManuals.com

Make Monkey Bread This Weekend!

If you've been following our blog you've probably seen similar posts about the Pillsbury Monkey Bread but I absolutely love it and it's so simple to make. Now is a great time to make it, several grocery stores in my area have the Pillsbury Grands on sale right now, as low as $ .69 so that's when I buy a few cans. To make this recipe you need 2 cans of the Pillsbury Grands, here is the link to the Monkey Bread Recipe. It is so gooey and delicious and the house smells like cinnamon, I secretly scoop out and eat the brown sugar and butter mixture that is left in the pan after putting the monkey bread on a plate. If that's wrong, I don't want to be right!

You will need brown sugar for this recipe, don't panic if the only brown sugar you have is hard as a rock, read my tips how to soften brown sugar that has hardened.

Next time: More Dog less Muffin!

I love to try the stuff I see on Pinterest so here's the latest, Corn Dog Muffins, I made these last night. Super easy to whip up I made the corn muffin mix, you don't need to buy a box, you just need cornmeal, flour, salt, sugar, baking powder, eggs, milk and butter or oil. I used a regular muffin tin and then just cut some pieces of hot dog up to put in the middle of the batter, I'm not a big hot dog eater, for years I called them tubes of death, but a friend introduced me to the Hebrew National Kosher Hot dogs and they are actually not bad, yes more expensive but worth it to me. Anyway I wasn't sure what size cut the hot dogs so I tried a few different sizes just to experiment.

When they came out of the oven I was a little worried because I couldn't see the hot dogs anymore, here are a few cut open.

They were really yummy but next time I think I will use less batter for each muffin because it was just too much muffin for that little piece of hot dog or I need to use a small muffin tin and make them bitesize. Either way they were super easy and really good with ketchup.

Buy/Sell/Trade Facebook Pages

My newest obsession, does anybody else have this were you live? Facebook pages created by someone local in your town or area of town where you buy sell and trade stuff with people that are in your area also, then you just meet up someplace to do the exchange. Obviously you want to be very careful and meet at a public place but most of the posts I see are all Moms getting rid of stuff. I posted something for free that I just wanted to get rid of a couple of hours ago and it's already taken, I specified that they pick up so I don't waste gas money delivering and I'm just going to meet them at the entrance to my neighborhood so they don't know exactly where I live. It's like having an online garage sale, just search the name of your area in the search area on FB and you might find something, if you live in the Seattle area like I do I can give you the links if you are interested, you'll be hooked, it's worse than Pinterest!!!

    Attn: Expert Lunch Packer's

Ok all you expert lunch packer's (is that a union organization?) oh wait that's meat packer's union, never mind, anyway this is my first year packing a school lunch for my daughter who is in Kindergarten and I need some creative ideas. I'm good with the side dishes.....applesauce, apples, yogurt, banana, chips etc....what' I'm looking for is main dish ideas that can go in a lunch box, so far I've done sandwiches, burrito (I just spread refried beans and cheese on a tortilla and wrapped it in plastic). What else can I do? It has to be something that is fairly easy to open and doesn't have to be heated up!

Trying to make the switch to Whole Grain Pasta?

If you've been thinking about making the switch to whole grain pasta but worried that your family won't like it, try my little secret! Start slowly adding small amounts of the whole grain pasta in with the regular pasta, and then every time you make it slowly add in more of the whole grain pasta. I'm betting that they won't notice and will eventually get used to the taste. If you don't want to be sneaky than just say we are going to try to get some more whole grains into our diet and a good way to introduce it is to start with a small amount and try to keep adding, maybe you'll find that you prefer a 50/50 ratio, whatever works for you.

This is how I'm feeling every morning now that school has started!

This is me in the morning now that school has started, gone are the lazy days of summer, sleeping until you wake up or until your child wakes you up! My daughter is in kindergarten this year so now we are up early every morning doing the mad rush to get out the door so we don't miss the bus, only 12 more school years to go WOO HOO (I'm trying to trick myself into being excited). She better be getting herself up by the time she goes to college or there's something wrong.

My daughter when she was almost 2, I love it!

Overflowing Garden? Food banks in your area might want it!

Did you know that a lot of Food banks will take fresh produce from your garden? You may have more zucchini and squash than you know what to do with, or apples, or even herbs that are taking over, if it's gonna end up going to waste, you could try calling your local food bank and asking if they will take it. I follow a couple in my area on facebook and they are asking for fresh fruit and vegetable donations from anyone that has a garden. I don't have a garden (wish I did) so when people give me extras from their garden I treasure it like a gift because it's so flavorful and fresh so I can imagine people getting food from the food bank would be overjoyed to get this wonderful gift, I'm guessing they don't always get the freshest stuff.

    This Really Does Work!

If you've seen this but wondered if it really works I can honestly tell you that it does. This is a picture I took in my garage of my onions so I didn't just steal a picture from the web, I actually do this and it's worth it. If you just buy a few onions here and there don't worry about doing this but if you buy a big bag from Costco or somewhere else it really makes them last longer. I buy the big bag because it ends up being about half the price per pound than if I bought them individually but there are only 3 of us in my family so it takes a little while to use them, if I just let them sit in the bag I end up having to throw away about 25% of them because they go bad before I use them, that kind of defeats the whole purpose of trying to save money. Now that I started hanging them like this, I can use every last one and they aren't rotten or slimy.

What are your thoughts on the Helium Shortage?

I'm sure you've heard about the helium shortage and rising prices, I've been reading a little to educate myself about helium. Helium is used for a huge variety of things, NASA uses it for rockets, it's used for welding and mixed with nitrogen to cool the magnets in MRI machines just to name a few but most people just think of balloons when they think of helium, actually the balloon industry uses a very small percentage of helium compared to other industries. Helium is a non-renewable resource and depending on what you believe and what article you read, some experts say we have been foolishly squandering our supply of helium and we have anywhere from 30 to 100 years left until our helium supply has dissipated, so unless we come up with an alternate or we recycle and recapture helium that is lost, future Generations will be left with none.
I think this goes for any of our natural resources, is it fair to use it up because we have it and just let the future Generations figure it out, we'll be long gone by then so what does it matter or would you be willing to make small changes right now to help even if it is just a small drop in the bucket? Obviously large users of helium should be working hard to conserve and recycle helium but what about us, average consumers? I mentioned earlier that balloons use just a very small percentage of the world's helium but would you be willing to stop getting balloons for birthday parties and celebrations, would life go on without balloons? Some people will say yes absolutely it's frivolous and unnecessary but what about people's livelihood, what if they have a small flower and balloon shop or they make balloon bouquets or have a party business, does that mean they lose a huge amount of income or maybe their business altogether?
I certainly don't know what the right answer is or what's true or not true but it's certainly something to think about. I would love to know your thoughts on this!!
