Make your own Easter egg dye!

I can't wait to try this. I was making my weekly Rite Aid trip talking to Michelle on the phone as I walked through the store (this is normal, I tell her all about the clearance deals at my store) and I mentioned needing to purchase an Easter egg dye kit. They're fairly inexpensive but then Michelle mentioned that I could do it myself. To my surprise the instructions are right on the box!

For some of you this may be a no-brainer but I've got to believe there are some that didn't know this already..like me!

I saw something on Pinterest about Kool-Aid but I don't have Kool-Aid and I think that may cost more than the dye kits.

If you already have Assorted Food color you can simply use that rather than purchasing dye kits.
Right on the back of the box of McCormick Food Coloring they give precise instructions on how to make 9 different colors from four base colors.
The instructions are right on the box!
Mix 1/2 cup boiling water, 1 tsp vinegar and food coloring! Dip eggs into dye for 5 minutes or longer.
RED = 20 drops
YELLOW= 20 drops
GREEN = 20 drops
BLUE = 20 drops
PRETTY PURPLE= 5 RED + 15 BLUE drops
ORANGE SUNSET = 17 YELLOW + 3 RED drops
TEAL = 5 BLUE + 15 GREEN drops
MINT GREEN = 14 GREEN + 6 YELLOW drops
DUSTY ROSE=14 RED + 6 BLUE drops

I can't wait to try this. Let us know if you've tried it and how it works out for you!

  1. This is how we always colored eggs when I was a child. We always used the recipe on on food coloring box. That recipe has been on the box for at least 50 years.
